Mr Zissels is no stranger to controversies of various sorts, but in
the case of Babi Yar project he was absolutely right. Like Mr Zissels,
I believed that the proposal to build a community center (which would
have included a number of entertainment functionalities) in or near
Babi Yar was quite outrageous. So did many Ukrainian Jews and non-Jews
who joined the protests, and in 2004 the project was shelved for good.
In September 2005 the President of Ukraine instructed his cabinet to
appoint a planning committee for creating a State Historical Memorial
"Babi Yar", the very idea that was advocated by Mr Zissels all along.
The committee was appointed, and although it has yet to make any
sufficient progress, in all likelihood, eventually there will be a
decent memorial in Babi Yar.
