As with most - so I understand - I am the child of Czernowitzers. My
parents (Budabin, Lehr, Kula) were very fortunate to obtain special
visas to Canada and arrived on August 27, 1939. Their parents and
sister and brother were able to survive the war in Europe - my
grandparents and my aunt got out in '42. My uncle was in the French
Air Force, and later escaped thru the American lines to liberated
France, and thence to Canada. Czernowitz is a part of my history, and
a part of my identity.

It would obviously be shameful for the history to stop at the end of
the 3rd of 4 volumes, and I hope that the letter writing will get
Volume 4 done too. I would, however, suggest that any serious or even
semi-serious historian will notice the omission, and will also have
an adequate general knowledge that the Holocaust did indeed occur. So
while Transnistria might not be a familiar name, I doubt that the
omission will be ignored when the history is evaluated. There are
many serious and frequently consulted records like Yad Vashem that
will drive the fact of the omission home most forcefully, and our
people will not be forgotten. In a sense, the Golden Age did die with
the Holocaust and the death or exit of the Jews. From most of what I
gather, what was left was not Czernowitz.

This is not an apology for leaving out Volume 4 - I would keep up the
letter writing. But we do have our records and we have this amazing
group, so the decision is survivable. What worries me more is that my
adult children have absolutely no interest, and I imagine many
readers have the same situation.

Dear Hardy, Dear Czernowitz discussion group,

Note that the article cited by Hardy was published five years ago.
It would be interesting to learn the outcome of efforts to construct
a memorial and community center at Babi Yar. Another comment follow
below.

As pointed out below, and fairly reported, there are two sides to every story.
