 My late father who was a member of the Czernowitz Maccabi football team in
the 20ties and later a member of the board that aranged in the 30ties
delegations of sport teams to participate in the "Macabia" (the sport games
of all Macbbi movements of the world which took part in Palestine of those
days and still is in our time in Israel). Among the team members from
Bukowina and Bessarabia were many that were not actually sportswomen or
sportsmen but "Halutzim" who in this way circumvented the ban of the English
on Jewish immigration. When we arrived in 1948 to Israel we got a warm
reception by those people.
