Even though many of the Yiddish speakers, were older Jewish Czernowitzers
and those who had recently moved from the villages, many spoke Yiddish by
preference, either because they were more religious, or because they wanted
to establish Yiddish as a literary language.
It is not by chance that the first Yiddish congress was held in Czernowitz.
It is not by chance that Itzig Manger and Eliezer Steinbarg chose to live
in Czernowitz.
Mostly, there was a social split between the Yiddish speakers and the German
speakers, but there were those who bridged the gap. They enjoyed speaking
German and German literature, but they also saw the expressive beauty and
rich variety in Yiddish.
