   Hi,
All the Jews came from villages ,stettlach , from Podolia, Galizia,
Transcarpathia ,
and their language was Yiddish. Long before the Austrian period.
It was during the benevolent Austrian rule that Jews made it good
and broke away from the Judestadt, tradition and Yiddish.
They threw away the kaftan ,beard and pejes and of course Yiddish.
But Yiddish thew knew -some more - some less .
They became the Bessere Menschen - they didnt mingle with the
traditional religious Jews of the Judenstadt. Only German was spoken.
1941 sorted that out : The Germans and Romanians made no
difference -
Jew was Jew , so all Jews were back in the Judenstadt , in the
Ghetto..

Hi, I think different families may have had different language histories.
Some grandparents certainly spoke Yiddish, possibly these came to czernowitz
from the villages. Others, including my family including
grandparents, uncles, cousins and all spoke good Austria german....including
the ceiling being the plafon and not die decke!! Yiddish was most
definitely very socially not the thing. cornel
