When I was first researching my family in Czernowitz, my mother would
tell me that her mother knew all these different languages. I
wondered how it was that a poor family back in the 1880s and 1890s
could afford to send their daughter to school to learn all these
languages. As I got a little older and started learning more about
the history of Czernowitz, I realized the answer to my question.

I certainly enjoyed this thread concerning languages. Unfortunately
howwever, I am a victim of the American school system of the 1950s,
and can only really understand or read English. Therefore I would ask
that when you write here in other languages, I would really
appreciate a translation to English. I know that sometimes the true
meaning can not be conveyed in another language, but I feel I miss so
much of the Czernowitzer experience, without these phrases. Thank you.
