My father Arthur Madfes spoke Yiddish and Rumanian with my mother (she was
from Piatra Neamts), Spanish with us kids who were born in Uruguay in the
50's, German with his brothers and sisters and often cited or sang in Latin.
As kids we were sent to a French school, so that I could be able to know
that his French was rather good too. When we immigrated to Israel, I heard
him after 3 weeks discussing about football with the gardener. I am sure he
invented 70% of what he thought was Hebrew, but it was admirable how he had
no sense of shame and was able to communicate.
Multicultural Czernowitz made him that way. Well. I have no sense of shame
either when I write in English: communication is more important than
perfection.
