To be born in a multilingual town as Czernowitz
was, makes it easier to practice several
languages.
A linguist would surely tell you that this puts
more chances on your side to learn languages. And
you have to consider that your mother tongue was
different from the official language(because you
all are born when Romania belonged no longer to
Austria) and you left Romania,so you had to learn
another language. So no wonder that most of you
are multilingual.
My 1907 born Czernowitzer grandmother was German
speaking (this is also my mother tongue). When I
asked her about Yiddish she told me that only her
parents spoke it and even if she understood, she
never learned.Later she had to learn Romanian.
As I learned my German at home I can tell that I
do not really feel at ease when I have to speak
with Germans(feel quite better with Austrians)
and consider that my German is not the best but
it made it easier to me to learn English. And as
am born and went to school in
Romania(Ploiesti,were Hedwig Brenner lived for
many years!)it was easier to learn French which
became my usual language since thirty years when
I moved to France. And this makes me able to
understand Italian...and so on .And I just
started to learn a new language.
I agree with those of you who think that learn
languages is a skill, more, I think it can be a
passion.
So for 2008 I wish you: Ein Gutes Neues Jahr!
Bonne Année! La mult¸i ani! and of course a Happy
New Year!
Hannelore
