In answer to Bruce Wexler's letter:
Unfortunately, it is not only money, which is needed, in order
to clear and maintain the Jewish cemetery of Czernowitz.
Someone would have to administer this money and supervise the work
to be done. To the best of my knowledge, there is no one in Chernivtsi,
whom we could entrust to administer the money, or supervise the work.
Unless the city or the Jewish community, can be convinced that
it is in their best interest to maintain the cemetery
and there is one of us, willing to travel to Chernivtsi, once
every year to see whether the funds we raise are spent appropriately,
I think that all our efforts and money will be wasted.
When I was in Chernivtsi for the 2006 Reunion, both the then head
of the Jewish community and one of the local rabbis, approached me
with written estimates (in Russian) which claimed $200 000
would be needed to restore the cemetery.
Draw your own conclusions.
