Dear Czernowitzers,

Hardy and I have debated off list, on the size of the plaque
and it's content.

At this point we (the Cz.-List), have as yet not decided what the
inscription should say, but I think that there is general agreement
that the inscription should be in Ukrainian and Romanian and possibly
also in English or German.

Only in order to calculate the size of the plaque, let's consider
the following inscription:

>>> ______________________________________
>>> HERE LIVED TRAIAN POPOVICI (1892-1946)
>>> IN 1941, AS MAYOR OF CZERNOWITZ,
>>> HE SAVED 20 000 JEWS FROM DEPORTATION
>>> TO TRANSNISTRIA AND PROBABLE DEATH.
>>> IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE,
>>> FROM THE JEWS OF CZERNOWITZ.
>>> ______________________________________

Let each letter plus the space to the next letter be 11 mm wide,
the space between words, also 11 mm wide.
each letter be 12mm high and the space between lines be 5mm high.
Then, this inscription in English, would measure 40.7 cm wide
And 9.7 cm high.

I can read an inscription of this size letters, from a distance
of about 1.3 meters (about 4 feet).

I do not know how many lines or letters this inscription,
translated into Ukrainian or Romanian would contain.

If we assume that approximately the same space will be needed
in Ukrainian and Romanian, a distance of 1.5 cm between languages
and a margin of 15 mm on all sides, the size of the plaque,
needs to be: 43.7cm wide and 36.6 cm high.

This size is probably as large as we can expect the plaque to be.
It does not allow space for a picture of Traian Popovici.

Whatever wording for the inscription we decide on, are any of you,
willing to translate it into Romanian and into Ukrainian?

I shall need to send a complete facsimile to Chernivtsi,
so the craftsman who will make it can copy it as is.

I do not know the cost of making the plaque. If I had it made
of Bronze, in the US, it would cost about $450.
It may cost less in the Ukraine. Once we are sure of the content
and design, Josef Zissels offered to get an estimate of the costs
and have it made.

Please send suggestions about the design, content and means
of collecting the necessary money to the list, by May 12th.

Happy Israeli independence day,

Mimi
