As far as I can determine, no one knows the exact number of authorizations
signed by Governor Calutescu, nor by mayor Popovici. We know that Traian
Popovici asked that 20 000 Jews be spared. The experts think the number was
19 600. Since we have no evidence to the contrary, let's leave it at that.
What is certain, is that had Traian Popovici not interceded for the Jews of
Czernowitz, far more of them would have perished in Transnistria.
