I have received an inquiry from a philanthropic organization in Hamburg
Germany, named Initiative 21, as to whether our mailing list might be
interested in one of their projects named SELMA, after Selma Meerbaum
-Eisinger. For the last 10 years, this organization has supported the
development of tolerance, self reliance and civil courage in children and
young adults. Current projects aim to motivate the young people to actively
oppose discrimination and intolerance.

Project SELMA encompasses three steps on the way to greater tolerance:
The Europe-wide writing competition [Why should I care about Selma],
The teaching package [Chasak - be strong] and the attached bus-tour
[STEP on TOUR] create a present-day approach to Anti-Semitism and racism.
Each of the steps of the project motivates the young people to become active
themselves against discrimination.

The point of departure and the center of the project, is the Czernowitz poet
Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger. [Why should I care], have asked more than 500 young
people between the ages of 10 and 21 from Germany, Austria, Luxemburg,
Switzerland and Italy. The variety of their answers extended from 4 lines to
many pages.

There is a further description of the material used and available from this
organization.

Their teaching packet will be used also on the bus-tour [STEP on TOUR] in
June 2008 on one to two day workshops in schools and youth centers in
Germany.

They ask whether their project is of interest to this mailing list and
should the answer be positive, they are ready to send us further
information.

I do not know whether to ask them to send the information to the list, to me
privately, or whether those of us who are interested should write to them
individually.
