The German word for horseradish is MEERRETTICH.
The word KREN, comes from the Slavic, not the word Chrein
from the German Kren, just as PALATSCHINKEN comes from Hungarian,
NOCKERL from the Italian gnocchi and SCHMETTEN from the Slavic SMETANA.
The German word ZWIEBEL comes from the Latin CIPOLLATUM
as does the Slavic TZIBULYE. The Yiddish TZIBALLE, at least to me,
sounds more like the Slavic than the German.

The Yiddish word PURETZ, does not mean robber or violent person,
which the Hebrew PARITZ does, from the root PRTZ, therefore I doubt
that the Yiddish PURETZ comes from the Hebrew. Possibly it is
the other way around.

Other Yiddish words of Slavic origin:
BABE grandmother
TATEH father
KRETSHME pub
VISHNE cherries
KACZKE duck
KWOTCZKE egg laying hen
SMARK snot
SMARKATE snotty
SCZOR rat
POLITZEH wooden floor.
PAPIROSSEN cigarettes
SZABE frog
KALETUCH fermented milk
KASHA buckwheat

Does anyone know the origin of the words:
CHNYOCK, SHMENDRICK, YACHNEH, YENTE, LOKSHEN, FARFEL?

Then there are the sayings made up of words of mixed origin, like:

NYE RUBEH MINYI TOIVES don't do me any favors
NAKTE HOLITZEH TANZT AUF DER POLITZEH naked Hutzul dances
                                       on the wooden floor
HAK NISHT IN CZAINIK don't talk so much

A GITTEN SHABES,

Mimi
