     Reading this , the uninitiated will get the impression that mamaliga
was a gourmet food.
     In Rumania it was not . In Italy some serve it with mushrooms : Polenta
con funghi.
       Some of the mushrooms are very rare and expensive - you pay for the
mushrooms.
     In developed countrys people dont eat corn -they feed it to cattle.
     Andy's eulogy to mamaliga is part of the nostalgia of years when we
were
    young and everything around us was "good and beautiful."
     In 1941 we found out that nothing was good nor beautiful.
       Including mamaliga.

            I hated mamaliga ! With any possible addition ,cheese,milk ,eggs
              or anything .But there was very little else.
       And the came 1946 and Rumania faced the worst drought of the century.
        There was no wheat or corn or anything. People died of starvation.
         Then the Americans sent a few ships with corn . Good american corn
        from the Midwest . The color ,the taste - everything was different .
         This was distributed free as a donation of America although Rumania
           was turning communist.
            The rumanians stood in queue, took their rations and shook their
heads:
           " This good malai (corn) they feed to pigs ?".
