Hi mimi and hardy...this is more complicated, because in german one can
refer to "eine proste frau" which can mean a simple or uneducated woman or
just be a derogatory expression. cornel

Yes Mimi I know:
1. Piste comes from the Ukrainean Pusto meaning Empty.(Adjective)
Use : Dus is piste Dillichs. ( this is empty talk).
This brings up another one : Dillen dem Kopp.Tchaden dem Kopp.
Tchad is the CO gas escaping from an oven due to improper
combustion. In UKR.
Dillen means endless and meaningless not to the point talk.
2. Stauber - origin not clear. Meaning : Fruit or vegetable grown to
unnatural
size but completely tasteless. Used as a description of people big
in size
but without any personal charm.

Do any of you know the origin of PISTE? STAUBER?
I would like to add one other expression to the Slavic-Yiddish lexicon:
PROSTE PUSHET. Proste in Ukrainian or Ruthenian, means simple or common.
Pushet, from the Hebrew PASHUT, also means simple or common.
Combining the two words together gave them extra emphasis.
