Plunder.
Whenever there was a change of regime there was looting.
During the 14 years of my life that I spent in Czernowitz we had
3 such changes : The 1940 Soviet take over.
The 1941 Rumanian World War Two outbreak.
                                The 1944 Soviet recapture.
During the take-over period there were always a short time of regime
vacuum.
No regime, no police – no law . Catch as you can.
According to tradition , people took axes and crowbars and took to the=

streets.
You had to get up early ,otherwise you had to wait in line for access t=
o
the loot.
The Germans put up signs :" Who plunders will be shot " but that did no=
t
deter very much.
What was plundered : First all the stores were broken open and looted.
Factories , offices, restaurants ,wine cellars, nothing was spared.
Feuer, a notorious vino from the Pizzelligasse , came dangling a
bucket .
        The neighbors shouted : " Feuer , don’t go looting, they’ll sh=
oot
you ".
"Who is looting ? there is wine flowing in the Russischegass ,they=

say , I just
take a bucketfull , it is a waste to let it flow".
And he was right , in the gutter of the Russischegass wine was
flowing.
Good red Cotnari. Somebody rolled out a few barrels and bashed in the
pegs and wine was spilling into the gutter .
After looting the obvious ,the second wave took the remainder:
Furniture, doors
windows , pictures ,lamps and more.
My brother came home with a telephone. As we had no line there was no=

use for it.
My mother said : "You take this back ,they will shoot us for this".
   So back it went.
Looting was not our cup of tea…
           Hardy
