Miriam (Mimi) Taylor <mirtaylo_at_indiana.edu>
Dr. Igel was Ober-Rabiner in the 19th century, that is when
the street plan of Czernowitz was decided on by him
and the Orthodox bishop (not sent from Austria).
The bishop who hid Jews during WW2, was obviously NOT he same bishop.
Before WW2, the leader of the Ruthenian minority, was Dr. Zalozeckyi,
considered the best physician in town, his wife was the Jewish Dr. Samet.
While these examples may not give the complete picture of Jewish-Ukrainian
relations, they certainly are part of it.
