Martin - I believe you can trace the U.S. side of the family via
naturalization, census, and ship manifest records. Sounds like
you've already done some of that. Have you checked the Yad Vashem
web site for pages of testimony to victims of the holocaust?

We have an ongoing project to index the burials in Czernowitz. There
is a record for the death of Adolf Goldschmidt, died at age 39 on
14-Aug-1942. I think the stone says son of (unreadable, maybe
Zalman) Tsvi. (Tsvi =Hersch?). I'll send it to you privately.
