Mimi,
Have just finished the book by Zwi Yavetz.
Very good ,it concentrates on the year 1937 with the big political
upheavals in
Rumania . Cuza and Goga and Codreanu . All notorious antisemites.
I was too young to remember .
There he also has the Cicero- Catilina speech in ukrainean as quoted in
Czernowitz
    by Jewish humor- lovers:
" Kilko sche Catalina, budesh nam srate do nashe kukurudze ?"
( How much longer, Catilina , will you keep shitting in our
kukuruz(corn).)
He also claims that von Rezzori was antisemitic by the way he
ridicules the
      wonder rabbi of Sadagura .
But he also writes in this manner describing the Rumanians and
Ukraineans.
But one one point he is certainly right , von Rezzori was certainly
the most talented
        writer of Czernowitz .
" This is to instruct the reader about the very big and glorious
land of Maghrebinia".
starts von Rezzori his "Tales of Maghrebinia".

Those who havent read it - do so. Preferably in German as it
befits Rezzoris yiddishisms.
            Rezzori knew Yiddish.

Subject: [Cz-L] Article from Ha-Aretz

The following article appeared in Ha-Aretz, almost 3 month ago:

A CITY THAT WAS AND IS NO LONGER
By Aharon Appelfeld
Tags: Zvi Yavetz, Ukraine

It is doubtful that another small city in the world has inspired so many
books and articles as Czernowitz. Why has it received so much attention?
That's not an easy question to answer. If we say that Czernowitz is located
between Eastern and Western Europe, and that it was influenced over the
generations by both worlds, we would be correct.
