Dear Anny:

You are of course entitled to your opinion, but I strongly disagree
with your assertions. If what you say is true, there would be no
plaques in the city to honor Sidi Tal and Josef Schmidt. There would
be no synagogue led by Rabbi Kofmansky, nor would a second synagogue
have been given back to the Jewish community last year. There would
be no Museum of the History of the Jewish Community of Bukowina at
all. Someone in Chernivtsi, without doubt Ukrainian, agreed to this
and promoted these moves. I met many outstanding Ukrainian
individuals during my visit to Chernivtsi in 1998, so I can't agree
with any opinion that characterizes Ukrainians with a single broad
brush stroke.
