Dear Hardy:

I can't even begin to imagine what it was like for those who lived
through the atrocities of WWII. I've tried to educate myself and my
family through visits to Yad Vashem, the US Holocaust Memorial
Museum, attending lectures by survivors (including Elie Wiesel),
visiting the Anne Frank House, and much, much more.

Genealogical research on my family took it all to a very personal
level. I found out that many of my own family were wiped out in
Transnistria and elsewhere.

But my opinion that we can not characterize the Ukrainian people in
only the terribly negative terms you describe, and that we should not
assume that today's generation of Ukrainian people are all as
blameworthy as their parents and grandparents, should not be so
simply dismissed because I wasn't there in 1941. As you know, Mimi
WAS there in 1941, and we happen to agree on this subject. By the
way, neither of us said they were a nation of Righteous.

But just as I wouldn't want to see Jews characterized as a people
determined to control the economy or the media, I can't be at fault
when I regret it when fellow Jews characterize other people in black
and white terms. The world is quite a bit more complex than that.
