Hi all! Back in London and have functioning computer! My broadband quit on
me in czernowitz...but it turned out to be some strange local weather
effect.Sylvia too had problems, she went to an internet cafe and they
returned her money because their connections failed as well. So..a late
report! After the brilliant sunshine we had for the first day of
festivities the 2nd day was an unmitigated disaster. From early morning the
heavens opened up and it poured. They tried to keep on with some of the
singing etc..but it was all very well for the performers in the covered
stands except for the fact that the audiences were holding umbrellas...so
tended to be rather tiny! We went to the austriaplatz to where the festival
of jewish culinary art should have been but no sign of it. We did come
across a group of 4 16-17 yr old Jewish girls who were also hungry..and were
handing out invites to an event they were organising for succot. So we kept
on searching...and found that the food had been moved to Mario Pizzeria on
the Theaterplatz. And excuse me while my mouth waters as i think back! They
produced one of my grandmother's dishes...a whole stuffed carp yum!! It was
a czernowitz version of gefilte fish. The rest..liver and onions etc etc
while excellent were an anticlimax after that!! That evening we went to
the herrengasse to the cafe wien, and were serenaded by a group of Austrians
from Karnten(Carinthia).More to follow. Cornel
