Sorry folks..I left out the Medias Project aims and objectives.""The project
aims not only to restore the building but of equal or even greater
importance to create a centre for local schools and communities to learn
about Jewish history, religion and culture. In a region proud of its
multicultural history it is ironic that the population has been so quick to
forget one of the ethnicities which lived for centuries alongside the
Saxons,Hungarians,Szekely,Romanians and Roma." Sounds very laudable!!!

Subject: [Cz-L] lecture

Hi all! David Glynn and I went to the Romanian Cultural Institute for a
fascinating lecture on research being done into old and abandoned synagogues
in areas of Romania where there are no jews left. Most are ruined, some have
been turned to other uses but the one in Medias was found to be in very good
condition, with hundreds of 19th century prayer books from all over Eastern
Europe. They also found a diary and an ID card belonging to a woman who had
been in Transnistria and had obviously survived and come back before
leaving. I asked and was promised some pictures of this very magnificent
surviving building with its beautifully painted interior, bimah intact, rows
of benches etc...if they do send them i will pass them on. The Eminescu
foundation is renovating the place with the same materials etc as used in
the original time. It will be used as a cultural centre and museum....the
last services there were apparently in the late 80s or so. Finally,we also
had a talk on Jewish culture in Romania by the professor of Hebraic
studies in Bucharest university, a gentleman by the name of Andrei Oisteanu.
At the end and after he had talked about the Bukowina we were asked for
comments...so I told them about the Popovici plaque...and the prof stood up
and said " I must tell you..I too am a Jew from Czernowitz" !!!! Turned
out he has family who are list members...one was at the lecture and her
sister was with us on the trip to Czernowitz! David and i were later
approached by people with Cz. connections...and I gave the website address
to several who had questions such as how to trace family. Also, for those
interested,Andrei Oisteanu has written a book called "Inventing the Jew"
about anti-Semitic stereotypes in Romanian and other central and east
European cultures...you can probably find it on Amazon published by Nebraska
University Press....I am giving a free plug for another Czernowitzer!
And that is it for now....regards to all .. Cornel
