Dear all,
I left Cz. in February 1942. we got permits (we weren't allowed to leave the
train compartment) from Cz. to Tulcea where a ship (which we had bought with
gold coins) was supposed to have waited for us. When we got there we
were "shepherded" by the local police to a 20 room hotel (we were a group of
80 people) one baby, 6-8 teenagers, the rest, which then seemed to me old
people - they must have been in their 50s. I guess or even younger-and in
that place we lived for nearly one year- in quarantine, After some days the
local community discovered our being there and started bringing us books,
food which the women cooked peacefully (amazingly so for Jews, you'd say but
it really was so) on ONE gas stove with four flames, including water for
washing from top to toe as, typically for Rumania no bath and nor room, But
there was one single whore who stayed in the hotel, there must have been
some business, I guess. In the late Summer we were allowed to find living
quarters and each family found a Jewish family who opened their doors to us,
for payment of course.
