Hermann Sternberg, in "Zur Geschichte der Juden in Czernowitz", in Gold, vo=
l. II, p. 28, explain in a footnote that the origin of the word is not clear=
. He says that it is a "sprachliches Kuriosum". Perhaps it was because it e=
xisted there a long time on the place a panel, carrying the drawing of a whe=
el, with, in three languages - Rumanian, German, Ukrainian - “Slow down! =
”, "Hemme das Rad", because the place was inclined. Or, that came from th=
e Moldavian “Ham”, “harness of horse” and has been maintained in th =
languagen a long time after the Moldovian Period.
