Linguistic Curiosity,
So it comes from the Moldovian period.
How old is it then - 500 years ?
Who is there to remember ? A few old-timers -Jews and Ruthens.
How much longer ? Not too much.
I still remember the Elektrische (tram) conductor ,turning the brake=

handle and
     shouting :" Ham - aussteigen !"

Subject: [Cz-L] Der Ham

Hermann Sternberg, in "Zur Geschichte der Juden in Czernowitz", in Gold,
vol. II, p. 28, explain in a footnote that the origin of the word is not
clear. He says that it is a "sprachliches Kuriosum". Perhaps it was because=

it existed there a long time on the place a panel, carrying the drawing of =
a
wheel, with, in three languages - Rumanian, German, Ukrainian - “Slow
down! ”, "Hemme das Rad", because the place was inclined. Or, that came=

from the Moldavian “Ham”, “harness of horse” and has been maintaine=
d in th
languagen a long time after the Moldovian Period.
