Shalom Ami,
I contacted you through the Czernowitz list. I introduced myself as Jerry
Lapides the son of Leo (Lazier) Lapides. Your father is my first cousin and
I knew when I visited Czernowitz is a young boy. Last time I visited as a
kid was in 1938. I visited Czernowitz as an adult in 1996. When ever I visit
Israel and connect with the Lapides family we talk about your father and his
family. I hope you are not offended by my note and that you will be willing
to keep a correspondence with me.
Warmly
Jerry
Jerry Lapides, Ph.D.

Dear Hardy,
Thank you for posting a picture of the city jail on Austriaplatz.
http://pics.livejournal.com/whasup/pic/00893p00
I have no idea whether this is the prison my father initially was taken to,
but I guess it could well have been.
After the Romanian fascists arrested my father, Michael Ohrenstein, (Maiku
born 1919, passed away 1980), he was held in prison in Czernowitz for a few
weeks. Who knows, maybe it was on Austriaplatz. Because he could sing
beautifully in his cell, my aunt Hemda Meilen told me the guards allowed her
to bring him food every day. I guess he would have starved otherwise. For
his activities in Hanoar Hatzioni he was subsequently sent to a special
death camp as a prisoner in Transnistria. My father then succeeded to escape
from the camp in extraordinary circumstances. 'Wanted' by the authorities
with a price on his head, he assumed a false identity in Bucharest for two
years until he was allocated one of the first places on the first ship
allowed out in a long time during the war, Milca A, sailing from Constanza
for Israel on the 4.4.1944.
He never looked back, and personally he would recommend against visiting
there, but it is intersting to see where his gruelling trip started out.
Best regards,
Ami Toren
