[Cz-L] Cz. Jewish cemetery

I have been too busy to respond to many of the recent messages
about the Czernowitz Jewish cemetery, but there were some messages,
to which I think it is important that I respond in order to set
the facts straight.

The Jewish cemetery has been declared as part of the national cultural
heritage of the Ukraine and as such is protected by certain laws.
I have a copy (in English) of these laws and will gladly send it
to anyone who wants a copy.

The Ukraine has for some time had severe economic problems
and just like what any other country in similar circumstances would do,
spends what-ever money it has on more immediate and urgent matters.
That is not to say, that there has not been neglect and mismanagement.

I have visited the cemetery four times in the lat six years and each time
am appalled at the extent to which it is overgrown, not just with the local
weeds and creeping plants, but with invasive creeping and climbing plants
and young trees. For those who may not know the term "invasive plants":
By this term are meant local and introduced plants which spread by either
seeds or roots, and have a faster rate of spreading and growing than other
plants, also damage other plants.

I also want to say that according to what I have seen, and Last summer,
I made a special point of verifying this, the Christian cemetery across
the street is only in slightly better condition than the Jewish one. In the
Christian cemetery, some graves and small areas are indeed well maintained,
but large areas are in just such a jungle state as in the Jewish cemetery.
This leads me to believe that the slightly better condition of the Christian
cemetery is due to the fact that a far greater proportion of the descendants
of those buried there, still live in Chernivtsi and surrounding area and
maintain the graves.

I have a number of photographs to prove this point and these too, I will
gladly send to anyone.

I will write to people I know in Chernivtsi in order to find out whether
there currently is an office a the cemetery at which it is possible to look
up the burial registers and obtain information and whether there is a
standard fee for this service.
