Thank you Rabbi Zwecker.
I still have one major question unanswered, that is the question
of how and who would pay for restoring the cemetery if the work
would be done through "Ohalei Tzadikim".
"Ohalei Tzadikim" may have the experience we lack. And yes, it costs money
to set up a nonprofit organization and fund.
But "Ohalei Tzadikim", like any other organization, also has to maintain
a staff and an office, which also costs money. As to your argument, that
we may be "ripped off by the locals";
We are in contact and consultation with local inhabitants of Chernivtsi,
both Jewish and Gentile, whom we have known for some years and know to be
perfectly honest and trustworthy. They will advise us.
To be quite frank and honest, I personally have previously been approached
by three different people, each representing a different Jewish
organization, who offered to have the cemetery restored. The sums they
wanted us to pay for the restoration, in the order thy were made are:
1. $200 000
2. $200 000
3. $600 000
I believe that the cemetery can be restored at a much lower cost.
I also believe that we can work together with the city administration
of Chernivtsi, so that they do some of the work which needs to be done
and we pay for the rest or have volunteers do some of the work.
I believe that we are more qualified to negotiate and cooperate/coordinate
our efforts with the city administration, than religious organizations.
It is my opinion that the restoration of the Jewish cemetery of Chernivtsi,
would benefit the city and that we can work together if we do not adopt
An a-priori antagonistic attitude.
This is just my opinion and I hope that there can be a general debate
within our list about this topic.
Thank you,
Mimi (Miriam Taylor)
