Jewish cemetery
Being new to the receipt of the Czernowitz e-mail. I abstained of "giving
Eitzes." After my recent visit in Czernowitz and dealing with Yuri
Prestopenko, the previous director of the Cemeteries and the current
Director of The Chernivtsi Centre of Cultural Heritage, I had a good
impression of him as a serious and decent person, who knows everything about
the cemetery. I suggested that he should be given the job of overseeing the
cleaning of the cemetery. Rabbi Kofmansky also told me that he is reliable
person, and the amount of money he asked from me for finding the grave of my
grandfather (with the information received from Bruce), bringing our family
group to the grave, hiring people to perform a small repair of the
headstone and cleaning the grave and its close surroundings (US$ 150 in
total,) I think that he is a modest person.promised me to send me a picture
after all the work is done, Kofmansky could be the supervisor of the entire
work. I think that there would be nothing wrong to use his services for it,
since all over the world, the orthodox people are extremely active in the
preservation of ancient cemeteries. I know how much trouble they cause in
Israel to developers, archaeologists when there is the slightest
possibilities that their work could affect Jewish graves. I believe, he
would do it without payment, as a religious duty and for his personal
honour. He was somehow hurt not being invited to the unveiling of the
Popovici plaque; therefore I assume that he would gladly undertake the
function of supervisor.
I do not know Dr Bursuk, I never met him, and I leave the decision to those
who know all the persons I mentioned.
