As I have mentioned before, from July 19th till Aug. 2nd the organization
"Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste" will hold a work-camp to clear
the Chernivtsi Jewish cemetery of weedy trees, bushes and vines.

I have had some correspondence with Anzhela Beljak, the organizer of
the work-camp and would like to share with you some of what she wrote me
in her latest letter:

Because the theme of our summer camp is "Jewish life", we are very
interested in all sources from which we might get help or reports. Thanks
for your offer.
Our summer-camp is the first pilot project in the western Ukraine and this
time we would like to include Czernowitz and Lviv, in the sense that we do
have a volunteer in Lviv who works in a social center and through her we
have good contact to the Jewish community.

The program for the summer-camps is being prepared by 2 young women from
Germany and our volunteers in Lviv. The plan is to work at the cemeteries;
4 days at Lviv and 10 days in Czernowitz. We most definitely, intend to
include as part of the program, many meaningful discussions, meetings,
visits to museums and talks with witnesses (to the Holocaust)
-------------------------------------------

I would like to ask members of the list to suggest reading material and
any other information sources which the volunteers might avail themselves o=
f
before and during the work-camp.

Possibly we should consider donating to the Jewish museum in Chernivtsi,
copies of books published in recent years about and by Jewish Czernowitzers=
.

Also, if any members of the group plan to visit Chernivtsi this summer,
please consider the possibility of timing your visit for the period during
which this work-camp will take place, and offering to talk to the volunteer=
s
about Jewish life in Czernowitz.
Last year, I talked to the volunteers of SVIT Ukraine. They were very
interested in what I remembered of my childhood in Czernowitz and I enjoyed
meeting these highly motivated, very conscientious nice young people.

Mimi
