Hardy, and everyone,
Hardy, I was interested and puzzled to read your comment that there is no
mass grave at the cemetery. Thinking about it, it seems like Mimi would
have mentioned it when we met there. And like you say, it isn't something
you would forget.
I am going to ask Pedro, the volunteer in our group who spoke with the
woman, and see what more I can find out. There is certainly a monument to
something there. And Pedro read the stone, along with some of the others in
our group.( I think, unless it was in Romanian and the woman was just
relaying it. ) I will also ask Katya, who is going back this summer, to
visit there again. But for now it remains a puzzle.
Mimi, do you know anything about this monument and what it might be?
I do know the story of Rabbi Mark and all the others who were massacred by
the river. I also read the testimony of Rabbi Mark's wife at the Nuremberg
trials.
It especially chilled me, having looked at Lucca's wonderful and poignant
photo of her grandfather's birthday celebration, which included the Rabbi
and his wife, as well as an adorable Lucca herself. And when I was in Cz. I
wandered into the building which was once the hotel where the Rabbi and
others were taken before they were murdered. I didn't know the history
until after I left. There is something that really haunts me about places
where terrible things occurred, but are today just everyday spaces that
people use, without knowing the history. In a way, I find it more chilling
than places like the death camps themselves, where everyone knows the
terrible history.
If people reading this haven't looked at Lucca's old photos and the others
on the website, you should.
