Subject: Galicia - Obituary notices from the Neue Freie Presse,
Vienna - a pictorial database with 200 searchable family names.

What started as an experiment I first reported on May 4th has
evolved into a new style of searchable pictorial database. I
believe it to be a genealogical first in the world, based on
obituaries. I chose Galicia because there are literally hundreds,
if not thousands, of Viennese obituaries many of which I have
stored in a different way. Obituaries which mention Galicia,
Germany etc are much rarer and easier to deal with this way. The
Neue Freie Presse is, as yet, not searchable so you have to find
these obituaries the old-fashioned way, by looking at every issue!

There are now 90 obituary notices from Galicia and Bukowina
including Bielsko-Bielitz on my Flickr site. Names range from
great-grandmothers and great-grandfathers, lawyers, mill-owners
and soldiers who died in WW1 to very wealthy, titled families:

The titled KALLIR/KALLIER family originated in Germany and
settled in Brody and later in Vienna. They were another famous
German-Jewish banking family. We can also see the OPOKA-
LOWENSTEIN-von HOROWITZ family. The TITTINGER-VALLENTIN-
LANDESBERG families link up and are located in Berlin,
Czernowitz and Lemberg.

In seven cases, I have matched the obituaries with the
tombstones in Vienna. One family, URVATER, migrated from Krakau
to Antwerp. There are also links to Hamburg, London, New York
and Smyrna. The dates range from 1878-1934.

Note the Thumbnail and Detail modes.

1. In Thumbnail mode - read the introduction and note the many
family names [to date, about 200] on the left. Then pass your
cursor over each picture to read its title:

2. In Detail mode, you can see the pictures in larger format -
each can be clicked on and enlarged to read the text notes and
see even more detail:

3. To search for a listed family name or location, enter the
chosen word *plus* the word Galicia into the Flickr search field
on the top right of the page and the correct obituaries will
appear.

For example - APPENZELLER, without the word Galicia yields 1000s
of hits; but with the word Galicia the obituary is the only one
which turns up. I did not even know this was a Jewish family name.
If you search for GROSSMANN plus Galicia you find the BOBER
obituary. If you search for CHAMEIDES and Galicia, two linked
obituaries and a tombstone will appear.

Or alternatively search for one of the given place names and add
Galicia in the same way. If you get too many hits - ie for
London Galicia add the word, Jewish. That will restrict the field
greatly.

It is really very easy, once you know what to do.

As and when I find more relevant Galician obituaries, I will add
them to the site. I hope you find the site as fascinating,
interesting and useful as I do. Most of these obituaries now turn
up in simple Google or Google Image searches too and have been
picked up by local Jewish sites in Krakau and France - this is
because I have included many tags which are selected by the
internet search engines. I am waiting for my first descendant to
find them. This has happened on my other pictorial tombstone sites.
