Of course, we all know the joke, Isuppose - Rosenfeld must have
practiced in the Negev, that's why there are no trees growing there any
more!
2. On another course of thought - have just returned from Bremen where
we were invited to the opera "Celan" written by the composer and
conductor Peter Ruzicka, former intendant of the Salzburg Festival.
Very difficult to describe the range of emotions which the (modern)music
and the theme, which includes holocaust scenes, evoke, leaving the
public silent at the end. Applause rose afterwards, slowly.
The opera will be shown in September at the Enescu Festival in
Bucharest. The Romanians insist nowadays thatCelan is a Romanian poet!.
Tonight in Berlin are going to a talk presented by Ilana Shmueli, who
has come from Israel to speak about Celan, whom she had known in
Czernowitz, had an affair with, and interesting correspondence published
a few years earlier. Now she has written another book which will be
presented tonight.
