In answer to Cornel:
In talks I had with Anzhela Nikolaeva, the cemetery administrator in
Chernivtsi, in April, she told us (Dr. Bursuk, Sasha Wolloch and I), that
she now had permission to apply herbicides to the cemetery vegetation. The
herbicides will be applied later this summer. I do not know and have been
unable to ascertain what kind of herbicides they intend to use. Not all
herbicides are equally effective against the various trees and creeping
plants which grow in the cemetery. I also have no control over the cemetery
administration and their decisions.
You might say that I am one of those who indulge in gardening; for the last
33 years, I have taken care of a 1.4 acre (5666 sq. meters) garden which
includes about 20 old trees and about 15 new trees, some of which reseed
quite profusely. I do occasionally employ someone to remove trees, or to cut
very large branches, but all the rest of the work is done by me.
Unfortunately this garden also includes patches of the same invasive vines
which can be found in the cemetery. I have managed to keep this garden in
good shape without using herbicides, except spot spraying of "Poison Ivy",
an American native plant, which luckily is not found in Europe and which
causes a very severe allergic skin reaction. In another Email I will provide
information on how you can access photographs of my garden to see for
yourself.
We are NOT having the trees in the cemetery pruned. We are having them cut
off at ground level. Cutting trees at ground level may result in new growth
and may not, depending on the type of tree, but sprouts from the roots, if
they do appear after the tree is cut, are more easily killed by herbicides.
The area of the cemetery cleared last year by the volunteers of SVIT
Ukraine, this year, is still free of trees and most creeping, climbing
vines.
