Cornel, Jerome and anyone else, who would like to do something practical to
move the project of restoring the Jewish cemetery ahead,
It would be very useful to know whether there is an organization of former
German or Ukrainian inhabitants of Czernowitz and their descendants, who
have been instrumental in having the Christian cemetery in Chernivtsi
cleared of trees, vines and bushes and to know how they went about it.
Please consider organizations in Canada, Germany and the US.
If you want to get an idea about the current difference in the condition of
the Christian and the Jewish cemeteries, access Google maps, search for
Chernivtsi Ukraine and adjust for satellite map at medium magnification.
The two cemeteries are in a straight line east of the Ring Platz, one
opposite the other. The Christian larger one to the right of Zelena Str.
The smaller Jewish cemetery on the left of Zelena str.
This satellite map was photographed in March 2009. The Christian cemetery
looks white, no dense vegetation, only few trees, the Jewish cemetery is
mostly dark, the ground covered with trees and vines.
