Yes, this is the photograph of saplings growing between two gravestones.
Their diameter is probably 10cm = 4". If you compare the size of the stumps
of the saplings in the other photographs with the size of the Ivy leaves,
they too are of about the same size.
Obviously, it is not possible to drill holes in all of them and and put
wood-eating bacteria into each hole. They will sprout new growth, in this
photograph you can see that this has already happened. If this tender new
growth is sprayed with herbicides, the herbicide is likely to be taken up by
the roots and the tree will die. Often it is necessary to spray such growth
repeatedly in order to kill the tree. Luckily "Norway Maple "is quite
susceptible to herbicides. Not so the climbing creeping vines like: Ivy and
Vinca. (The little green leaves in the foreground are English Ivy.

Hardy write: If this (stump) increases in diameter ,the stone is doomed.
He is correct. That is why it is so important to cut all sapling trees,
before they become fully grown.
