I object to calling Czernowitz a "black joke". If you must interpret the
name as half Slavic, half German, Witz in German also means cleverness.
Yesterday, while googling Czernowitz, I came across a very interesting
article by Fred Stambrook named:
"The Golden Age of the Jews of Bukovina 1880 - 1914".
Read it and be impressed.
