Dear Mimi et. al:
According to the information I was able to dig-up (pardon the pun),
the oldest tombs in the cemetery, from its opening in 1866, hold the
remains of people born in 1783, nine years after the Austrian
Habsburgs had acquired the Bukowina. An older Jewish cemetery dating
from around 1770 -- the "Turkish Cmetery" -- had existed under Ottoman
rule but was closed by Habsburg authorities and replaced by the
present one. Many of you may be familiar with two good sources for
Czernowitz cemetery history: Alti Rodal, "Bukovina Cemeteries,
Archives, and Oral History," Avotaynu 18, 3 (Fall 2002): 9-15, and
Othmar Andrée, Czernowitzer Spaziergänge: Annäherungen die Bukowina
(Berlin: Rose Ausländer Stiftung, 2000).
