Dear all,
SVIT Ukraine plans to hold a seminar in Czernowitz on the subject of the
preservation of the Jewish cemetery. Unfortunately, I do not have the final
text of the announcement of the seminar, but below is a rough draft of the
announcement and it is definitely correct about the subject matter, the time
and location of the seminar and the financial help available to those who
want to participate.
Please note that the invitation to participate is extended to
"representatives of the Jewish Diaspora of Chernivtsi".
If you live in Europe, or are going to be in Europe at the end of August,
please consider participating in this seminar.

> ³Mirror of history preserve the Jewish cemetery in Chernivtsi²
> International seminar
>
> Call for participants
>
> Chernivtsi, Ukraine, 24-27.08.2009
>
> In August 2009, a second group of international SCI volunteers will be coming
> to Chernivtsi to work on the historic Jewish cemetery, one of the biggest
> preserved historic cemeteries in Central and Eastern Europe. Chernovtsy
> (Ukrainian Chernivtsi, German Czernowitz) is a regional center
> in the Western Ukraine. Along with Lvov, it is considered to be the cultural
> center of this region. The city has a rich history, cultured background and
> varied architecture; in different periods it was part of the Turkish Empire,
> the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and Romania. Because of this and its very
> multi-national community, it was called ³little Vienna² or ³European
> Alexandria². According to the population census of 2001, 65 different
> nationalities live in the city, which has a total population of about
> 250 000 residents. One of the larger ethnic groups is Jewish. Before the 2nd
> World War, the Jewish community played a very important part in the life of
> the city. One of the traces left by the this community, is a cemetery of the
> 19th and first half of the 20th century, which has many tombstones carved in
> interesting folk style as well as others, designed by famous artists.
> During the 2nd World War the Jewish population suffered terrible losses at the
> hands of the Nazis. Those who survived the war mostly emigrated. All this
> creates a special background for this project, as well as rich opportunities
> for study.
>
> This year, while continuing the work at the cemetery, we would also like to
> consider more broadly the means by which to preserve it; the future measures
> and activities, which need to be carried out with that goal in mind.
> In broader terms, applicable both in this case, as well as in general, we
> would like to consider the possibilities for the preservation of historical-
> and cultural-heritage monuments, through volunteer work-camps.
> This project is organized in cooperation with the Chernivtsi city council,
> with the financial support of the ³Memoria² program and realized jointly by
> the "Foundation for Remembrance, Responsibility and the Future" and the Stefan
> Batory Foundation. The aim of the program is to interest young people from
> Central and Eastern Europe in common work to preserve the European cultural
> heritage. It has the support and help of the Jewish Diaspora of Czernowitz and
> SCI-Germany through local activists and NGOs.
>
> We would like to invite SCI activists, representatives of NGOs and
> institutions interested in historical and cultural heritage, as well as
> representatives of the Jewish Diaspora of Chernivtsi to join the seminar.
>
> Conditions:
> All costs concerning meals and accommodation as well as the program and
> materials will be fully covered for the whole duration of the seminar. Travel
> costs will be reimbursed 70%, given that participants use the most economical
> and environmentally-friendly way of travel.
