Mimi, you wondered about the basis for my assertion that some Jewish
(what I had in mind) leaders were unwittingly complicit, or at least
enabling. I referred to the Jewish community leader(s) or
representative(s) --- I'd have to re-read the report to give you the
name(s) -- who helped organize the census of all the Jews, names,
addresses, mother's names, ages (if I remember correctly) and all ---
a list that Antonescu used to round everyone up before he began the
transports. Without that inside knowledge history might have been
different --- more might have been able to dodge the round up or
escape the region, whether or not they could have escaped death
elsewhere. As for America and elsewhere today, I don't want to make a
political statement about any specific group because there are a
number of these worldwide, but since 9/11 there has been a tendency
to generalize about all Muslims and to accost them randomly, for
instance, that came to mind. And of course there was the American
action against any and all the Japanese in our country in the '40's.
