Czernowitzers... Several days ago, I received the first email below. I
responded by asking what avenues of investigation had already been
pursued. The second post below will indicate that Blanche has done a
substantial amount of work and come up empty. If you can help her
please send your suggestions to her directly as she is not a list
member. I'm sure she will appreciate some guidance.

Best,
jerome

Subject: Photos of Ukrainian towns
Date: Sun, 26 Jul 2009 05:46:36 -0700

I am researching for genealogical purposes the tiny towns, once in
Galicia,
that are today located in the Ukraine; these towns are Stari
Strilyshcha,
Novy Strilyshcha, Utykhovychi, Tuchne, and Svirzh. As you can
imagine, it
has been impossible for me to locate any information at all.
I am wondering if you know of the existence of any photographs of these
places, either past or present. If you do, if you would telll me
where to
locate/purchase these, I would be most grateful to you.
Thank you for your time and any help you would be kind enough to give
me.
I look forward to your response at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,
Blanche Deutsch

Dear Jerome--
I really appreciate your getting back to me regarding the towns in
the Ukraine about which I am looking for information.
You asked where I have searched for information and I can honestly
tell you that I have searched every conceivable place I could think
of. I have done google, yahoo, and webcrawler searches. I have read
Miriam Weiner's books as well as those of Suzann Wynne and Gary
Mokotoff. I have searched Jewish Gen and Ancestry, as well as other
online sources that have come up either online or in my readings. I
have contacted universities that offer Eastern European Studies. I
have contacted Jewish museums and others in the Ukraine, Poland, and
the US. I have contacted Ukrainian and Polish embassies. I went to
YIVO in NYC and am planning to go to the Holocaust Museum in
Washington, DC. If there are other places out there to search, I
don't know of them.
You asked about the coordinates of the towns and I have them for
you.
Stari and Novy Strilyshcha -- 49 31 2 N 24 24 2 E
Svirzh --- 52 0 42 N 33 24 42 E
Tuchne ---- 49 34 0 N 24 28 0 E
I am not able to locate the coordinates of Utykhovychi but I do know
that (a) it is very near the other towns, (b) it is in the
Peremyshlany district, and (c) its Galician name was Wojciechowice
(there are other towns by this name in Poland but none in the Ukraine).
Again, I thank you for your time and kindness in responding to my
email. If you should happen to find any mention of these towns, or
any past or present photographs, please advise.

Sincerely,
Blanche
