It may be of interest that my grandfather left Czernowitz for Britain at the
very end of 1907. He always regarded his country of origin as Austria. But
when he was naturalised as British in 1927, his nationality of birth was
given as 'Roumanian'. Czernowitz was by then located in the interwar
country called Roumania with a 'u', unlike the present-day country which is
spelled Romania and includes only Southern Bucovina. I don't think my
grandfather ever left Britain between 1907 and 1927, but his wife (my
grandmother) did. She was Dutch by birth and had spent nearly all her life
in Britain, so she was most amused to find that her nationality acquired by
marriage, and the passport on which she was obliged to travel to visit Dutch
relatives, was 'Roumanian'.

What country would someone arriving from Czernowitz between 1900 and 1910
list has his origin. I am looking for a relative, Sam Davidowicz, that left

Czernowitz sometime between 1900-1910, and have found 3 candidates, one
listing Austria, the other Roumania and the third Russia. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Saul
