Hi Bruce
Thanks very much for this. It is good to know that my great-grandfather's
grave has been found, even though disappointing that the gravestone has not
survived. It makes sense from family knowledge that he died in 1917. (His
is the last of my great-grandparents' graves to be located. His wife's is
in Czernowitz. Four more are in London, and the other two were I think
cremated in London.)
No-one known in the family has the names Schmiel or Fischel. This person
may have been my great-grandfather's brother or father, or a cousin from a
previous generation, but there are a few other Siederers in the street
directories whose names are similarly unknown to us.
The surname translates as 'boilermaker' or 'saucepanmaker'. It is a
complete mystery to us why such a name would have been chosen when surnames
were adopted by Jewish people in that area, which I understand was in 1789.
Is it possible to check the burial registers for the name Riemer,
specifically Mechachem Mendel Riemer and his wife Perl, who were my other
Czernowitz great-great grandparents (and CH Siederer's parents-in-law)?
Perl Riemer might have been listed as Perl Freier. The only other name of
interest would be my grandfather's oldest sister Pepi Goldenberg and her
husband Leon, who might have died in Czernowitz in the early 1900s or just
possibly the 1890s. (We think it was Goldenberg not Goldenburg, and heaven
knows what Pepi was short for. The family were strong on nicknames.)
Am I correct that the LDS microfilms are presently held only in Salt Lake
City, awaiting processing onto the LDS database? Once this is done,
presumably the results will appear on the LDS International Genealogical
Index, and we will all be able to attempt much fuller family reconstructions
than is possible at present. Also, I assume that there is only one
microfilm, at Salt Lake City, but at some stage copies will be made
available to other LDS collections such as the one in London.

Hi Nigel:
Thanks for joining the group. The burial register lists Chaim Hersch
Siderer at parcel 56 (now Area 38) plot 198. The stone at that
location is completely crumbled. He died in 1917, and I'm pretty
sure the LDS microfilms for Czernowitz would have the death record,
with possibly parents names and other information. Ruchel was buried
in Parcel 49, plot 112 and there is also a listing for Schmiel
Fischel Siederer, died 1908, parcel 55, plot 19. Ruchel, Schmiel and
Chaim are the only listings for the name Siederer.
I can help you with further information from the burial registers for
the surnames you mention.
Hope this is of some help!
Bruce
