Further to my post in August about the new book
by Simon Geissbuehler, Jewish Cemeteries of
Bucovina, I'd like to add the following details.
This book was published by Noi Media Print, Str.
Petru Maior Nr. 9, Sector 1, Bucuresti, e-mail:
nmp_at_nmp.ro, web: www.nmp.ro .
The author, Simon Geissbühler, is a Swiss
diplomat, with a Ph.D. in political science from
the University of Berne, Switzerland. Since
March 2007, he is the Deputy Chief of the Mission
of the Swiss Embassy in Bucharest.
Forwards for the book were written by Dr. Aurel
Vainer, President of the Federation of Jewish
Communities of Romania and Member of the Romanian
Parliament; and Ruth Ellen Gruber noted author
and historian
<http://candlesticksonstone.wordpress.com/posts/>,
Bucovina descendant, and cousin of our group
member Rae Barent. Her preceding blog is a
must-read for those interested in
Radautz/Radauti, as is her Jewish Heritage blog,
<http://jewish-heritage-travel.blogspot.com/>.
The book itself presents town-by-town
descriptions of cemetery locations (not always in
enough detail to find the cemetery), as well as
information on the Jewish communities of each
town (just one page per town), along with many
stunning recent photos of each cemetery. Most,
not all, of the cemeteries are located in
Bucovina; some are just outside of the borders.
The cemeteries described and pictured in this
book are located in: Campulung Moldovenesc, Vama,
Gura Humorului, Solca, Arbore, Radauti,
Moldovita, Siret, Mihaileni, Storozhynets,
Vyzhnytsia (Wiznitz), Banilov, Vashkivtsi,
Novoselitsa, and Hertsa.
It's a beautiful book; done very artistically and
respectfully; and representing the culture and
prominence of the Jewish communities of pre-WWII
Romania. It may soon be available from commercial
booksellers (ISBN 978-973-1805-50-4) and can be
obtained now from the author, Simon Geissbühler,
at <simon.geissbuehler_at_eda.admin.ch>.
Shana Tovah!
