I'm not sure about Czernowitz.

But there is a known story of the Rebbe of Sadigura Rabbi Avrohm
Yakov TZ"L (as know there were two Rebbe's after the war Reb Avrohm
Yakov & his nephew my great grandfather Reb Mordechai Shalom Yosef).

One early morning a person spotted the Rebbe sweeping/cleaning the
street in front of his house in Tel Aviv.

When the person approached the Rebbe and asked why is he doing this.
The Rebbe's reply was "That when I lived in Vienna one day the Nazi's
forced me to clean the street in front of my house, that moment I
took upon myself that if I ever make it to Israel with God's help, I
will clean the streets of the Holly land".

Dear all,

I was quite stunned by the pictures of Czernowitz Jews sweeping
streets since I do not remember reading or hearing any accounts of his
specific indignity. There are accounts of forced labor but not
specifically of being made to sweep streets. If any of you have
specific recollections of this, I would appreciate them very much.

many thanks and all best, Marianne
