Dear Marianne,
I see that there is no response to your request for street sweeping
recollection.
I was not in the age of the affected population and what I
say is not from personal experience. It is merely a speculation:
" Soon after the occupation of the town in July 41 ,the streets
were full of rubble , blown up buildings ,plundered burnt-out shops,
the not collected garbage . Then one morning there was a decree pasted
on the billboards around the town saying so:
" Labour for communal benefit (Munca de folos obstesc).
I , C.Calotescu ,Governor of Bucovina , decree that as from today ,# in
July 1941
all jewish males between the ages of 18 and 40 , must report for public
labor
at the city hall at 8 o'clock in the morning.
Any who will not comply will be severely punished ( Three days
shooting and
5 days hanging - as the Jews would say).
Signed C. Calotescu ,"
The next day all the called up reported :
The municipality supplied the brooms,
the City - the dirty streets,
The Jews the labor.
In October came the Ghetto and deportations and the "Munca"
stopped.
After the Ghetto the "Munca " renewed its activity ,but not street
sweeping :
Jews were sent for lengthy ( monthly ?) periods to dig military
trench lines
in Falticeni and more .
These fortifications were never used.
