My father, Chaim Weinschenker, was subscripted for "munca", and I remember =
that he worked on building a road. What I vividly remember is that when he =
left, his hair was black. When he came back, his hair was snow white.

Those who remained in Czernowitz, then Cernauti, after the deportations
of 1942, ostensibly were allowed to remain, because they were working at
jobs for which they were indispensable, therefore for a time, people were
not subscripted for "Munca", but in the fall of 1943, there was a new
"Munca";=A0 building a road somewhere in the southern part of Romania.
It was backbreaking work under harsh conditions. But the freedom of
individuals could be bought for a hefty Bakshish. One of my uncles, was on
this munca and my parents bought his freedom and he consequently was able
to get to Palestine in the winter of 1944.
