[Cz-L] MERLING from Itskany Bokovina

Hello all:
I am (fairly new) to this list and already have received invaluable
help from both Bruce Reisch and Merle Kastner, to whom I am eternally
grateful.
My grandfather, MARKUS MERLING was born (I think) in 1859 in Itskany
Bokovina and arrived (via Hamburg) in "Ellis Island" June 1895.
Aside from the fact that he married my grandmother 6 mos later in NYC
and had 3 children and died in 1910 in a paupers grave in Staten
Island,
I know absolutely nothing about him. I did find Merlings in Montreal
Canada but they have little or no knowledge of him altho I know we are
related.
So....if anyone can tell me where I can search for his actual birth
record....perhaps school....perhaps military service (he was 30 when
her arrived
in the US).....anything at all.....I would be ever so grateful
