The basic Red Army Truck was te GAZ that is acronym for State Automobile
Factory or
Gosudarny Avtomobilny Zavod in the local speech.
One day in 1944 a long echalon (that is convoy) passed through town .
100, 200, maybe more trucks passed from the east Russischegasse
turning into Morariogasse and then over the Prut ,way North ,to the
Baltics.
One truck veered into a yard and stopped. He had tyre trouble and had to
fix some
punctured tyre tubes.
The driver got out and started unloading all the necessary gear.
Then he made a fire. Then he undressed , shaved and made laundry.
All kids of the neighborhood came close to watch.
Then he asked for some newspapers. Not for reading , for smoking.
The paper was cut into small pieces ,than a sack of Machorka came out
and
cigarettes were rolled. Machorka was that raw tobacco of Russia ,
including
branches of various plants and other vermin. When drawing a deep
smoke
the cigarette woud go on fire.
Then he started to fix the tyres. He brought out all the tools and
started
to make "vulcanizatsya" that is hot puncture repair.
He filled a pail with water and inflated the tube by a hand pump
and looked for leaks.
Then he cooked something to eat and went to sleep.
He stayed there for four days.
He was a nice, middle aged Russian .
When asked how he would find his unit who was now in the Masurians
1000 miles away he said that this was no problem, you can always ask.
